The Persuasion or Argument Prospectus and Paper

N4970 is a Writing Intensive course and, as such, requires that substantial writing constitutes a significant proportion of the course grade. Although there will be in-class writing assignments that will contribute points to the total grade, the major writing assignment for the course is the persuasion paper also known as the argument paper. 

An initial prospectus or description of the paper is the first required element of this assignment. The prospectus is described below.

For the paper itself, two drafts and a final paper are required. The first and second draft will be reviewed by the instructor and are not graded but are returned with comments that are given to help the student improve the paper.  The grading rubric for the paper appears at the end of this assignment document. 

The purpose of the persuasion paper is for you to select a public health related issue on which you feel strongly and prepare a paper to persuade a particular audience to change their opinion about a specific issue and adopt the writer’s premise or world view. If you feel your audience cannot totally change their way of thinking, your job is to present enough persuasive evidence (derived from your research, and any form of support facts or data (anecdotes? Statistics? Emotional yet logical appeal? Etc.)

What are some possible public health issues of concern?  There are a plethora of them, but a few examples (and only a few) follow. Select a pro or con position with the purpose of convincing the audience to change their view on a particular topic.  

  • School lunch and childhood obesity
  • Decriminalization of marijuana
  • Criminalization of tobacco
  • Medical benefits for non-martial partners
  • Screening of international visitors for HIV/AIDS
  • Required vaccination of companion animals
  • Required vaccination of children
  • Required vaccination with HPV vaccine
  • Variation of health insurance rates based on health risk factors (e.g., familial hyperlipidemia, high risk recreation, cigarette smoking, and high-fat diet)
  • Use of the emergency room for primary care
  • The responsibility of the government for the health of workers (including nurses)
  • Should individuals with MRSA be quarantined?

The Prospectus (25 points)

Writing the Prospectus

The purpose of a prospectus is to describe and plan the proposed paper 

A good prospectus will:

  • describe a question or issue the paper will address;
  • identify the sources that will be used;
  • outline a possible plan for the paper (the steps of the argument);

The prospectus should include the following:

Working title. Initially the title should be simple and descriptive. As work on the paper progresses, an argument or thesis will emerge that helps structure the paper. The final title may then resemble a book title, which is usually in two parts, with a colon separating the parts. The first is short & catchy, the second longer and more descriptive. For example the rising rates of lung cancer: Should tobacco be made illegal?

Description. A paragraph or two stating the topic and explaining why the student selected the topic and why it is important. 

The basic problem or questions that will be addressed. The central question or questions should be stated explicitly. The student should also include any ideas that they have about possible answers to those questions. A good question is the key to a good paper. 

The audience for the paper. Who or whom you are attempting to influence.

Working outline. You should present your argument, step by step, section by section. 

An annotated bibliography, with sections for primary and secondary sources.

The sources should include reliable web sites from reputable sources. However, Wikipedia or other online encyclopedias are not acceptable. You should include relevant web sites and journal articles at which you have looked with describing the source. The prospectus should comprise 2-3 pages in all. 

The Paper (100 points)

The most important parts of the paper, often called Higher Order Concerns are the big picture elements such as thesis or focus, audience and purpose, organization, and development. After you have addressed these important elements, you can then turn your attention to the Lower Order Concerns such as sentence structure and grammar. 

Thesis or Statement of Position
  • Summarizes theme of paper clearly and thoroughly enough in the introductory paragraph(s) to lead seamlessly/logically to thesis statement 
  • Makes a clear, understandable statement of the position taken in this paper
  • States position in an audience aware manner, i.e., in a manner that the interests of the intended readers are considered and also in a manner that offend intended readers
  • Supports position with evidence with strong evidence. Strong evidence consists of reliable statistical information and evidence from the professional literature, particularly research findings. Anything from Wikipedia is NOT considered strong evidence. 
Audience and Purpose
  • Focuses on the needs and perspectives of the reader
  • Considers the reader’s knowledge and demonstrates sensitivity to readers’ education, beliefs, and attitudes
  • Uses clear, familiar language targeted to the designated readers
  • Writes to enhance credibility
  • Uses sources in appropriate manner,
  • Presents logical/reasonable evidence,
  • Maintains professional yet engaging tone. 
Organization
  • Arranges information logically and thoughtfully (ensures logical information flow)
  • Connects ideas coherently, i.e., uses transitions to ensure flow and to link ideas
  • Writes topic sentences and stay on topic in paragraph
Research
  • Shows evidence of having read appropriate sources
  • Includes a correctly done list of references (bibliography) and in-text citations (APA style)
  • Uses references effectively and ties each quote or paraphrase in with what is being said (i.e., does not just drop in a quote with no apparent connection to discussion)
Length

This paper should be a minimum of seven to a maximum of ten pages. The cover page and the reference list are not included in page total.

Format
  • Double spaced
  • One-Inch Margins
  • 12 pt. Times New Roman font
  • All citations and items in the bibliography mush follow the APA citation style
  • Include a properly formatted reference list and a cover page that detail the title of the paper, the name of the student, the date, and the name of the clinical instructor.
  • Papers are not to be put in any type of folder or binder; a staple in the upper left hand corner are both necessary and sufficient.
