Congratulations to Dr. Claire Horisk, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Writing Intensive instructor, who just published Dangerous Jokes: How Racism and Sexism Weaponize Humor with Oxford University Press. In 2019, when she was developing the ideas she explores more deeply in her new book, Dr. Horisk serendipitously met Dr. Christy Goldsmith, Campus Writing Program Associate Director, at a Conley House writing retreat. In the spirit of seeking feedback on writing—a hallmark of the Writing Intensive philosophy—Claire asked Christy to become an early reviewer of the blog entry, “Racist Jokes May Be Worse Than Racist Statements,” that would propel Dr. Horisk toward her new book. In the years after this conversation, Dr. Horisk attended many Campus Writing Program writing retreats, including the 2022 Summer Writing Retreat at the School House Bed and Breakfast in Rocheport, Missouri—where Claire would begin drafting the final chapter of her new publication. She was a participant of this year’s summer retreat and shared that she finished this book during our 2022 session. At CWP, our mission is to promote teaching through writing across the curriculum, and we take pride in in celebrating the accomplishments of our writers, such as Claire’s. If you have a publication that you developed during one of our writing retreats, please reach out to us! We’d love to hear from you. Contact us!

We greatly appreciate seeing the tangible results of our faculty and staff’s dedicated efforts on their writing projects.
