Guidelines for Large-Enrollment Writing Intensive Courses

*Note: Due to the added challenges of teaching large-enrollment WI courses, these guidelines are in addition to the general WI course guidelines
Instructors of large-enrollment WI courses must do the following:
  • Consult with Campus Writing Program staff and/or pilot a version of the proposed large-enrollment WI course.
  • Describe the large-enrollment class structure, including meeting schedule, instructional format (e.g., lecture, lab, discussion), and who is responsible for instruction.
  • Explain how individual student progress will be monitored and assessed within the large-enrollment structure.
  • Describe the processes used to ensure grading consistency across sections and graders (e.g., shared rubrics, norming sessions) and for handling student concerns about assignment grades.
  • Confirm that all teaching assistants assigned to the course complete the Campus Writing Program’s TA training.

1. A large-enrollment course is defined as one that includes multiple TAs to maintain a 25:1 student:instructor ratio.

2. The complexities of teaching a large-enrollment WI course demand that an instructor have an opportunity to rehearse major components of the course (e.g., writing assignments, grading standards, training sessions with course support staff).
